What is keratin?

Keratin is found in our hair, skin and nails. You’ve probably heard of the protein listed as an ingredient in other conditioners and hair treatments. What you might not know is that keratin is the main component of healthy hair. When our hair is damaged, it becomes dehydrated, brittle and frizzy as a result. However, some people’s keratin levels are low and are therefore naturally more frizz-prone than others. This is especially true for those with curly hair. No matter how many conditioners, oils and masks they slather on, the dreaded frizz always seems to return. In these cases, keratin treatments can be life-changing. Not only do they leave the hair smoother and shinier, but they also help to strengthen and rebuild damaged strands.

"Duck & Dry's Keratin Wash and Dry treatment banishes that annoying unwanted frizz and replaces it with shiny, smooth and effortlessly luscious hair—24/7. Thanks to D&D's trained professional stylists, it's a smooth operation from start to finish." - Vanity Fair

What is a Brazilian blow dry at a salon?

While the names are interchangeable and dependant on the brand, they essentially both do the same thing: smooth and strengthen hair, eliminate frizz, reduce volume and improve manageability. Unlike relaxers, a keratin treatment is not a permanent straightener, rather a semi-permanent effective solution. The treatment formula is applied in sections using a small brush. The entire process can take around 4 hours but this is determined by how long, thick and curly your hair is.

Who are keratin blow dries best for?

Keratin treatments will not leave your hair permanently straight, so if you’re looking for pin-straight strands, this probably isn’t for you. That being said, they will take some of the volume and coil out of very curly hair. Those with loose curls and waves struggling with a lot of frizz and unwanted thickness will notice that their hair is much sleeker, but still maintains some movement.

Come summer, even those without curly hair can benefit from a keratin blow dry. Anyone whose hair is unmanageable, frizzy and dry will see a dramatic difference in the look and feel of their hair, as well as the amount of time it takes to style.

What happens during a keratin treatment?

The treatment itself is simple. Below is the step by step breakdown…

Step 1: Initially, the hair is washed twice using a sulphate free shampoo to remove any dirt, grease or product.

Step 2: It is then rough-dried thoroughly before the treatment is applied.

Step 3: The keratin treatment is carefully brushed through small sections, making sure not product touches the scalp. This is left on for 15-20 minutes depending on the thickness and amount of frizz.

Step 4: Blow drying the treatment in is the next step before sectioning the hair and going over each area with straighteners.

Step 5: The hair is then washed using Duck & Dry Up, Up & Away sulphate free shampoo and Conditioner.

Step 6: Finally, the hair is ready to be styled as desired. Either blow dry or enjoy your naturally smoother, frizz-free strands.

How long does a keratin blow dry last?

It varies depending on the individual, but with proper care using the correct products, the results of our keratin treatment last between 3-6 months.

Is there any keratin blow dry aftercare?

You must use sulphate free shampoo, conditioner and styling products, as sulfates strip the treatment out your hair. We recommend our Up, Up And Away Shampoo and Conditioner. You should also avoid getting your colour done afterwards for the same reasons.

How much does a keratin blow dry cost?

Prices really vary depending on hair type, thickness and length. Our keratin blow dries starts at £160, but you will need to speak to a stylist first to determine the cost.
